National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management (NLRCM)

Leadership Roundtable Newsletter

February 2008

Dear Friend of the Leadership Roundtable ,

Frank Butler, Bishop Madden, James Davidson

In the two and a half years since the Leadership Roundtable was formally incorporated, we have achieved and accomplished a tremendous portion of what we set out to do. Measurable accomplishments can be seen in resource and product development; number of bishops actively and supportively engaged; number of successful consultancy engagements; levels of participation by our 200 senior executive members; invitations to speak; interview requests from reporters; sales of our products; visits to our web site; and endorsements from Church leaders. Most importantly, across the country Church leaders and actively engaged Catholic laity are taking seriously the wisdom and virtue of aspiring to excellence in the management of the Church's temporal matters.

This newsletter provides an update on our progress and highlights the quality of our resources, the effectiveness of our activity, and the importance of our mission. Thank you for helping to strengthen the Church through your participation and service.

Partners in Excellence

Partners in Excellence

The Standards for Excellence: An Ethics and Accountability Code for Catholic Dioceses, Parishes and Nonprofits provides a comprehensive set of detailed performance benchmarks for measuring governance and ethical performance.

Dioceses, parishes and Catholic nonprofits across the country are becoming Partners in Excellence, implementing the Standards for Excellence and accessing educational resource materials with templates and practical tools.

Since the Standards for Excellence were published in November:

  • Over 3,000 copies of the Standards for Excellence have been distributed
  • Every bishop in the country has received copies of the Standards for Excellence
  • 50 Catholic philanthropic foundations have received the Standards and been encouraged to use them with grantees
  • 13 national Catholic ministry associations have completed an organizational self-assessment using the Standards for Excellence
  • Nonprofit boards, councils of priests, seminary classes and individual parishes have begun to use the Standards for Excellence.

Progress Update

The members of the Leadership Roundtable board, council and working groups dedicate their time and expertise to achieving our plan of action priority items:

  • The Leadership Roundtable Board of Directors met on the campus of Santa Clara University in San Jose, CA, on January 21, for its first meeting of 2008.  Bishop Patrick J. McGrath celebrated Mass for the group and joined the Board of Directors for part of the board meeting.  Bishop McGrath preached on the Gospel of Mark 2:18-22 and the challenge of pouring new wine into old wineskins and commended the Leadership Roundtable for its efforts to bring about new standards for excellence in Church administration and financial matters.
  • The working group producing the Restoring Trust report held a think-tank session in Chicago with contributors from the Church, Education and Corporate fields.  Read a brief update on their work
  • We have continually added more topics and resources to our free, online clearing-house of best practices, www.ChurchEpedia.org.  Please visit the website to view the contents and to submit your own suggestions.
  • The Planning Models working group has issued a proposal for services to engage top Church planning experts in developing a planning guide for use by dioceses.  The guide will be made available on ChurchEpedia.org and will be accompanied by case studies and practical tools.  Click here to send us examples of successful planning efforts in your diocese.
  • The Performance Management working group has developed a rationale for a performance management and review process for clergy and lay ministers and is now collaborating with a number of partner organizations to develop competency models, a 360' feedback instrument, a tool kit of practical resources and to design training workshops for parish staff teams to implement competency-based development.  Does your parish use a performance management process?  Click here to share you experience with us.
