National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management (NLRCM)

Leadership Roundtable Newsletter

April 2008
Dear Friend of the Leadership Roundtable,
 Cross

As we approach the great feast of Pentecost we celebrate the many talented people - laity, men and women religious, deacons, priests and bishops - who collaborate in ministry to our Catholic Church.

This is a time of great hope for our Church.  The extraordinarily positive and hopeful pastoral visit of Pope Benedict XVI was indeed a needed gift to the Church in the US.

Last week in Orlando 1,200 lay ministers, deacons, priests and bishops gathered at the National Ministry Summit to focus on leadership in the Church.  As evidenced in this newsletter the Leadership Roundtable continues to develop resources to equip and strengthen these leaders in their management of the Church.

These are all signs of hope that the Holy Spirit is transforming our Church and renewing the face of the earth.

Free Assessment Tool for Parish Ministry

Assessment of Parish Ministry - ScorecardThe Leadership Roundtable has developed a tool to assist parishes in assessing the strengths and opportunities for improvement in parish life and ministry and in discerning how best to strengthen and improve parish strategies and practices.

This tool's use of Balanced Scorecard® methodology enables parish leaders to frame their assessment in terms of the parish's values in seven dimensions of its ministry and management:

1. Development of Leadership Capacity

2. Quality of, Access to, and Satisfaction with Ministry

3. Governance, Consultation, and Decision Making

4. Planning, Structure, and Systems

5. Communications: Internal and External

6. Participation in the Life of the Church

7. Financial Resource Development

Ministry Summit Calls for a Culture of Accountability

"Create a culture of accountability through performance reviews for all ministers - ordained, religious and lay - that reflect the application of best practices of emerging models of parish leadership."

That was one of the key recommendations from over 1,200 lay leaders, deacons, priests and bishops who gathered in Orlando last week for a national ministry summit on emerging models of pastoral leadership.

Engaging the Faith Community in Leadership

Following last year's focus on human resource development, the primary theme of this year's Leadership Roundtable annual membership meeting is Managerial Excellence: Engaging the Faith Community in Leadership in the Church Today.

Topics to be explored will include strategic planning, the current challenges of changing demographics and declining financial capability, and the need for excellence in Church leadership.

Our deliberations will lead to specific strategies and practical recommendations for strengthening the leadership capacity and effectiveness of Catholic Church leaders - lay and ordained.

Christ Our Hope - Papal Visit
The week before the pastoral visit of Pope Benedict XVI, Leadership Roundtable executive director Kerry Robinson called for the Pope to bring healing and reconciliation to the Church in the US.  View report

Through the Pope's words and actions, in his addresses to the bishops, priests and lay faithful, and especially through his meeting with victims of clergy sexual abuse, a message of hope was indeed conveyed.
